The best rhinoplasties don’t look like rhinoplasties. A successful rhinoplasty procedure should create results that are natural, balanced, and harmonious with your face. At Beachwood Plastic Surgery and Westlake Plastic Surgery, Dr. Steven Goldman—a triple board-certified rhinoplasty specialist—is known for his technical expertise, artistic vision, and personalized approach. Every patient’s surgery is tailored to their needs, which means the right time for rhinoplasty depends not only on your goals, but also on factors such as age, lifestyle, and recovery planning.
Rhinoplasty is best performed once the nose has finished growing. For most teenagers, this occurs by age 16. Adults of any age may be candidates as long as they are in good health. During your consultation, Dr. Goldman will evaluate your individual features and recommend an approach that suits your facial proportions and functional needs.
Any season is a great season for rhinoplasty. However, younger patients who are still in school will often do the procedure over winter break, spring break, or summer vacation. Patients who work may choose a time of year that is less busy for their profession.
Most patients who work will take a week off of work. Most students will have the surgery during a school break, which often affords two weeks or more of recovery time.
Patients who travel from out of town will generally spend five days or more in Cleveland.
Exercise is permitted starting two weeks postoperatively. We recommend you start slowly, but otherwise have no restrictions. Patients who want to swim underwater may need a little more time for internal healing, to avoid irritation.
Patients generally have bruising (black eyes) that is difficult to conceal for about a week and a half. Any bruise generally takes about three weeks to fully resolve. Most patients do return to work or school with some residual, bruising and swelling. For major life events, like weddings, we recommend having your rhinoplasty three months or more ahead of time.
Dr. Goldman utilizes both open rhinoplasty and closed (endonasal) rhinoplasty, tailoring each procedure to the patient:
Because each rhinoplasty is highly individualized, pricing varies depending on the type of surgery, complexity, and patient goals. At your consultation, Dr. Goldman and his team will provide a detailed treatment plan and transparent pricing tailored to your needs.
If you’re considering rhinoplasty, make sure that you find a surgeon who is experienced and accomplished with this complex procedure. Dr. Goldman is one of the few surgeons nationally who is triple board certified in Facial Plastic Surgery, Plastic Surgery, and Otolaryngology.

Most patients return to work or school within 1–2 weeks. Bruising takes about three weeks to resolve, but can usually be concealed about a week and a half postoperatively. The majority of the swelling resolves by three or four months, but some swelling persists for several months. Furthermore, the skin of the nasal tip, in particular, may take 1-½ to 2 years to fully contract and shrink to show the final results.
The open technique uses a tiny external incision for greater surgical precision, while closed rhinoplasty keeps incisions inside the nose. The external excision is rarely visible long-term for the open technique.
Dr. Goldman utilizes both techniques, but most patients benefit from the more precise and dramatic changes that can be achieved through the open approach. The closed approach can be used for noses that need more subtle changes. Both methods can achieve natural results.
Yes. Functional rhinoplasty can correct blockages, like a deviated septum, or other structural issues to improve airflow while also enhancing appearance.
Discomfort is generally mild to moderate and managed with medication. Most patient only use narcotic pain medicine for 2 to 3 days. Some patients only use Tylenol. Swelling and stuffiness are more common than pain during early recovery.
