Body Contouring with Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)
Tummy Tuck and Liposuction
The two basic goals of the abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck, are to remove excess skin and tighten loose abdominal muscles. Loose skin and weakening of the muscle can result from weight loss, aging, and pregnancy. The excess skin is generally removed from below the waistline to the level of the belly button. The underlying muscle is tightened by stitching the connective sheath that covers the muscle, to gather the loose area together, flattening the belly.
Variations on the tummy tuck
The most commonly performed tummy tuck procedure is the full abdominoplasty which involves removal of skin from just below the waistline to approximately the level of the belly button. This leaves two incisions, which are concealed in the waistline and around the belly button. The term mini-tummy tuck generally refers to a procedure in which a smaller amount of skin is removed than in the full abdominoplasty. Usually, skin is removed from the waistline to about half-way up toward the belly button. No incision is made around the belly button. The waistline incision is a little smaller than the full abdominoplasty incision. If the skin excess is minimal and muscle tone is good, a non-surgical skin tightening procedure like Thermage or the Fraxel Re:pair CO2 laser (both available through Dr. Goldman and Beachwood Plastic Surgery) may be appropriate. Liposuction can be used if a patient has excess fat in and around the belly, but has minimal excess skin and is not significantly overweight. Liposuction can be safely combined with abdominoplasty. Dr. Goldman uses liposuction with the majority of his tummy tucks to sculpt the abdomen and give a aesthetically pleasing contour. Results with this combination of tummy tuck with liposuction create an hour glass-shape after surgery.
