Latisse™

Now available at Beachwood / Westlake Plastic Surgery and Medical Spa, LATISSE® (bimatoprost opththalmic solution 0.03%) is a new FDA approved solution which is applied to the eyelash line to help lashes grow longer, thicker and darker.

LATISSE® is a prescription, available only from a physician, and is applied once a day to the skin just above the upper eyelashes (where the upper lashes meet the eyelid).

Results are gradual; most patients start seeing results in 4 to 8 weeks and will notice the full transformation somewhere between 12-16 weeks. This is because the normal growth cycle of eyelashes is about 4 months; in other words, it takes about 4 months for all the existing lashes to fall out and be replaced by new lashes. You must keep using the product to continue to see the effect. Once discontinued, it takes about 4 months for new lashes to re-grow with the previous thickness and length.

The ingredients in LATISSE® are:

Active ingredient: bimatoprost. Bimatoprost has been used for years as an eye drop for the treatment of glaucoma. Eyelash growth was noted as a side-effect.
Inactive ingredients: benzalkonium chloride; sodium chloride; sodium phosphate, dibasic; citric acid; and purified water. Sodium hydroxide and/or hydrochloric acid may be added to adjust pH. The pH during its shelf life ranges from 6.8 — 7.8.

Side effects have been reported and include; eye irritation, redness, itchy eyes, and less commonly, darkening of the skin where the solution is applied. These are temporary and if you experience any of these side effects, discontinue using LATISSE® and they should quickly subside.

The main risk, which may be permanent, is increased brown iris pigmentation which happened in 5% of glaucoma patients who used the active ingredient in LATISSE® as an eyedrop. We know of no causes using LATISSE®, but it does contain the same ingredient. The difference is that with LATISSE® a smaller amount is applied to the skin, not the eyeball itself. However, if you have light eyes you may want to wait until LATISSE® has been in use for a while first.

LATISSE® is a prescription and may interfere with other medications you are taking so it is important to only get it after consulting with a doctor familiar with this product.

Dr. Goldman is available for consultation and LATISSE® can be purchased in our office.
