Mommy Makeover Recovery Timeline: What to Expect

A mommy makeover is a life-changing procedure designed to restore and enhance your body after childbearing. This comprehensive surgery typically combines abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), breast enhancement, and liposuction to comprehensively address physical changes that occur due to pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding.

Breast enhancement may comprise breast augmentation, breast lift, reduction, or a combination of these procedures to create a more youthful, full, perky appearance.

Dr. Goldman’s mommy makeover emphasizes a fit hourglass contour and rapid recovery. Rapid recovery involves precise, gentle surgical technique and early motion and ambulation after surgery. We work together with our patients to help them understand their role in the rapid recovery process, to optimize beautiful outcomes and minimize downtime.

What is the downtime from a mommy makeover?

Recovery time depends on the combination of procedures performed, but most patients can expect the following:

  • Highlights:
    • We have our patients  walk  about 10 minutes every hour immediately after surgery.
    • You can shower 48 hours after surgery.
    • You can exercise 2 weeks after surgery, except for abdominal exercises and heavy weight lifting.
    • No limits on exercise at 6 weeks postop.
    • Most patients return to work 1-½ to 2 weeks after a mommy makeover.
  •  Week 1: Light activity, especially walking, is essential. Most patients take some narcotics for 3-5 days, but pain is minimized by moving. Swelling, bruising, and moderate fatigue are common. If you have small children, have assistance with childcare for about five days. Most patients are out of the house in 4-5 days. We have you wear a compression garment about 22 hours a day, which helps reduce swelling, bruising, and pain.
  • Week 2: Most patients can drive about a week after surgery. Most return to desk work at about a week, but don’t work full time until 1-½ to 2 weeks.
  • Weeks 3-6: Most of  the bruising and swelling resolves by about three weeks. Aerobic exercise, including running, is permitted—but no sit-ups, heavy weight lifting, or other exercises that work the abdominal muscles until 6 weeks postop.
  • 6 weeks to 6 months: Results become more visible as swelling continues to fade, and scars begin to mature. Most patients return to full activity and strength around 3 months. Trace swelling and bumpiness at liposuction sites usually resolves by 6 months. Final results are visible around 6 months, except for subtle changes and softening.
  • 1-2 years: Any scars (surgical or otherwise) take 1-2 years to fully mature and fade. Dr. Goldman uses meticulous surgical technique, silicone sheeting postop, and other tricks to minimize scaring. Tummy tucks cause numbness of the lower abdomen, which improves but typically leaves a small area of numbness permanently above the mid waistline.

Tips for a Smooth Recovery After a Mommy Makeover

  • Move, move, move—light activity immediately after surgery sets the trajectory for rapid recovery.
  • Follow Dr. Goldman’s detailed post-op instructions closely.
  • Wear compression garments as directed.
  • Be patient—healing is a gradual process.

When to Contact Your Plastic Surgeon

Some swelling, bruising, and discomfort are normal. However, if you notice severe or unusual pain, excessive bleeding, or signs of infection (redness, swelling, tenderness, fever), contact your surgical team immediately.

Mommy Makeover Recovery FAQs

How long is mommy makeover recovery?

Patients start walking at home the night of surgery. Most patients take some narcotic for 4 to 5 days. Patients are out of the house in a week or less, including driving. Patients can start exercising at two weeks, but no abdominal workouts for six weeks.  Patients typically feel  somewhat fatigued and limited with exercise for about three months.  Residual swelling, and smoothing resolve over 6 to 12 months.

How painful is mommy makeover recovery?

Dr. Goldman uses a rapid recovery technique and an injected numbing medicine called Exparel that works for about two days after surgery. Most patients do require narcotic pain medicine at least intermittently for the first 3 to 5 days. Most patients walk slightly bent over for a week or less. Pain does vary greatly patient to patient for any surgery.

When can I return to work after a mommy makeover?

Most patients can do some work from home a week or so after surgery. Patients typically  can return to desk jobs outside the home in two weeks or a little bit less. Jobs that involve heavy lifting or strenuous physical activity may require 4-6 weeks off.

When can I exercise after a mommy makeover?

We encourage our patients to walk about 10 minutes an hour as soon as they get home from surgery, the family member. Aerobic exercise and light weightlifting is permitted at 2 weeks postoperatively. Sit-ups, other abdominal workouts, and heavy weight lifting is permitted starting 6 weeks postoperatively, but we encourage patients to start slowly. Most patients are back to full strength with exercise 3 to 4 months postoperatively. Most patients report that their core feels stronger and that they can do more sit-ups, lift heavier weights, or even run a little faster.

What helps speed up mommy makeover recovery?

Patients should optimize good nutrition and regular exercise starting well before surgery. After surgery, Dr. Goldman emphasizes early ambulation (walking) and light activity. Following your surgeon’s instructions, wearing compression garments, resting, and maintaining good nutrition all support faster healing.

When is the best time of year for a mommy makeover?

Mommy makeovers can be performed  any time of year depending on your schedule. Most patients do this whenever they can schedule a break from job or family responsibilities. Many patients prefer to do the procedure in the winter, so that they can be ready to wear a swimsuit by summertime.

How long do I have to stay in Cleveland if I’m traveling from out of town?

Domestic out of town patients will spend 5 to 7 days in Cleveland, unless they’d like to spend more time in the area for their comfort. Patients from out of the country generally need to spend two weeks in the area.
