A mommy makeover is a life-changing procedure designed to restore and enhance your body after childbearing. This comprehensive surgery typically combines abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), breast enhancement, and liposuction to comprehensively address physical changes that occur due to pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding.
Breast enhancement may comprise breast augmentation, breast lift, reduction, or a combination of these procedures to create a more youthful, full, perky appearance.
Dr. Goldman’s mommy makeover emphasizes a fit hourglass contour and rapid recovery. Rapid recovery involves precise, gentle surgical technique and early motion and ambulation after surgery. We work together with our patients to help them understand their role in the rapid recovery process, to optimize beautiful outcomes and minimize downtime.
Recovery time depends on the combination of procedures performed, but most patients can expect the following:
Some swelling, bruising, and discomfort are normal. However, if you notice severe or unusual pain, excessive bleeding, or signs of infection (redness, swelling, tenderness, fever), contact your surgical team immediately.
A mommy makeover can help you reclaim your confidence and restore your pre-pregnancy shape. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Goldman to create a personalized plan tailored to your goals.
Patients start walking at home the night of surgery. Most patients take some narcotic for 4 to 5 days. Patients are out of the house in a week or less, including driving. Patients can start exercising at two weeks, but no abdominal workouts for six weeks. Patients typically feel somewhat fatigued and limited with exercise for about three months. Residual swelling, and smoothing resolve over 6 to 12 months.
Dr. Goldman uses a rapid recovery technique and an injected numbing medicine called Exparel that works for about two days after surgery. Most patients do require narcotic pain medicine at least intermittently for the first 3 to 5 days. Most patients walk slightly bent over for a week or less. Pain does vary greatly patient to patient for any surgery.
Most patients can do some work from home a week or so after surgery. Patients typically can return to desk jobs outside the home in two weeks or a little bit less. Jobs that involve heavy lifting or strenuous physical activity may require 4-6 weeks off.
We encourage our patients to walk about 10 minutes an hour as soon as they get home from surgery, the family member. Aerobic exercise and light weightlifting is permitted at 2 weeks postoperatively. Sit-ups, other abdominal workouts, and heavy weight lifting is permitted starting 6 weeks postoperatively, but we encourage patients to start slowly. Most patients are back to full strength with exercise 3 to 4 months postoperatively. Most patients report that their core feels stronger and that they can do more sit-ups, lift heavier weights, or even run a little faster.
Patients should optimize good nutrition and regular exercise starting well before surgery. After surgery, Dr. Goldman emphasizes early ambulation (walking) and light activity. Following your surgeon’s instructions, wearing compression garments, resting, and maintaining good nutrition all support faster healing.
When is the best time of year for a mommy makeover?
Mommy makeovers can be performed any time of year depending on your schedule. Most patients do this whenever they can schedule a break from job or family responsibilities. Many patients prefer to do the procedure in the winter, so that they can be ready to wear a swimsuit by summertime.
Domestic out of town patients will spend 5 to 7 days in Cleveland, unless they’d like to spend more time in the area for their comfort. Patients from out of the country generally need to spend two weeks in the area.
