Fat Grafting vs. Fillers vs. AlloClae: What’s the Difference?

Home | Body | Fat Grafting vs. Fillers vs. AlloClae: What’s the Difference?

When it comes to restoring volume in the face or body, patients today have more options than ever.

Fat grafting, dermal fillers, and newer treatments like AlloClaeTM each offer different benefits depending on your goals, timeline, and desired level of enhancement.

Understanding how these treatments compare can help you choose the approach that fits your needs.

What Is Fat Grafting?

Fat grafting, also known as fat transfer, uses your own fat to restore volume.

The process includes:

  • Removing fat through liposuction
  • Purifying the fat
  • Injecting it into areas like the face, breasts, or body

This approach is often used for patients who want a more natural solution using their own tissue.

What Are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are injectable treatments designed to add volume and smooth contour irregularities.

They are commonly used for:

  • Lips
  • Cheeks
  • Under-eye hollows
  • Fine lines and wrinkles

Fillers are typically quick, in-office treatments with little downtime, but they are temporary and require maintenance over time.

What Is AlloClaeTM?

AlloClaeTM is structural adipose filler derived from donor fat. It contains fat cells and extracellular matrix from which DNA and other cellular components have been removed using a multi-step proprietary process that preserves many structural components of fat. This allows the product to induce collagen and perhaps fat cells in the area in which AlloClae is injected.

It is similar to autologous fat injection (fat injected back into a patient after being harvested by liposuction and purified). But AlloClae is different in that it contains no living fat cells but more intact structural components of fat that may serve as a matrix or scaffold for collagen and fat in-growth (although the exact mechanism of this process is still being studied).

It is most commonly used for:

  • Filling of hip dips (between the buttock and outer thigh).
  • Treating cellulite dimples (but not the diffuse skin thinning that often accompanies cellulite, which is treated with other techniques, such as dilute Radiesse or non-surgical skin tightening).
  • Camouflaging rippling around breast implants in very thin patients.
  • Small volume breast augmentation — more for contouring cleavage and upper pole hollowing than adding volume.
  • Smoothing out dimples or irregularities following liposuction.
  • Small volume buttock augmentation. This serves more as an alternative to Sculptra or other fillers than to autologous fat grafting for augmentation, as only small volumes are used.
  • For the hands, in older patients with thin skin.

Key Differences Between These Options

Procedure:

  • Fat grafting requires surgery and liposuction
  • Fillers and AlloClaeTM are performed in-office

Downtime:

  • Fat grafting involves recovery at both donor and treatment sites
  • Fillers have minimal downtime
  • AlloClaeTM typically involves mild swelling and a short recovery period

Results:

  • Fat grafting may provide longer-lasting results using your own tissue
  • Fillers are temporary and require repeat treatments
  • AlloClaeTM may offer longer-lasting structural support, though results vary

Which Option Is Right for You?

The best treatment depends on your goals:

Choose fat grafting if you:

  • Want to use your own fat
  • Are looking for more significant volume
  • Are comfortable with a surgical procedure

Choose fillers if you:

  • Want quick, temporary results
  • Are treating smaller areas or fine lines
  • Prefer minimal commitment

Choose AlloClae™ if you:

  • Want a non-surgical option with more structure than traditional fillers
  • Prefer subtle, natural-looking enhancement
  • Want minimal downtime without liposuction

A Customized Approach to Volume Restoration

These treatments are not interchangeable—they are tools used in different ways.

In some cases, patients may even benefit from combining treatments to achieve the most balanced result.
