The Power of Dermaplaning: What It Is, How It Works, and Why You’ll Love It

Home | Medical Spa | Non-surgical Treatments | The Power of Dermaplaning: What It Is, How It Works, and Why You’ll Love It

When it comes to achieving smoother, brighter, more radiant skin—without downtime—dermaplaning (also known as epidermal leveling) is one of the most-loved treatments at our medical spa in Cleveland. Whether you’re prepping for a big event or simply want to elevate your daily glow, dermaplaning offers immediate, makeup-ready results that make skin look naturally refreshed.

In this post, we’ll walk through what dermaplaning is, how it works, how long it lasts, and why it’s a safe and effective way to keep your skin smooth and luminous.

What Is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a non-invasive exfoliation treatment that removes dead skin cells and fine vellus hair (commonly known as peach fuzz) from the surface of the skin using a medical-grade scalpel. Despite how that sounds, it’s a gentle process performed by trained providers and leaves skin feeling ultra-smooth and glowing.

The goal? A fresh canvas that not only looks incredible but also allows for deeper product absorption and more flawless makeup application.

How Dermaplaning Works: Step-by-Step

At Dr. Goldman’s office, dermaplaning is performed in four careful steps:

Step One: Clean and Prep

We begin by thoroughly cleansing your skin to remove makeup, oil, and debris. It’s best to come in with a clean, dry face—skip your morning moisturizer or skincare products to ensure the treatment is as effective as possible.

Step Two: Exfoliate and Remove Peach Fuzz

Using a scalpel, your provider will gently exfoliate the top layer of skin, removing dead cells and peach fuzz in the process. This step reveals the bright, smooth skin underneath and sets the stage for enhanced product penetration.

Worried about hair growing back darker or thicker? That’s a myth!

Vellus hair cannot turn into terminal (coarser) hair—so your peach fuzz will grow back just as soft and fine as before.

Step Three: Soothe and Hydrate

After exfoliation, we apply a calming, hydrating mask customized to your skin type. If you’re looking for a little extra exfoliation, a light chemical peel can be added to boost your results.

Step Four: Protect and Glow

We finish the treatment with a high-quality SPF to shield your freshly exposed skin from sun damage. You may experience slight redness that subsides within 15 minutes to a few hours, and a light tinted moisturizer can help even things out immediately if needed.

How Long Does Dermaplaning Last?

The results of dermaplaning typically last three to four weeks, which aligns with your skin’s natural cell turnover cycle. Many of our patients schedule monthly dermaplaning treatments to maintain their glow and keep their skin smooth, soft, and makeup-ready year-round.

Is Dermaplaning Safe?

Yes—when performed by a trained professional, dermaplaning is safe, gentle, and effective for most skin types. It involves no chemicals or harsh abrasives, making it an excellent option for those with sensitive skin or women who are pregnant and seeking a non-invasive exfoliation method.

While the treatment is painless, it’s important to follow post-treatment care, especially applying daily SPF, since your skin will be more sensitive to sun exposure.
