Cutting-Edge Botox™ and Neurotoxin Injections, Beyond the Basics

Our master injectors used the most advanced and nuanced neurotoxin injection techniques taught by triple-board-certified plastic surgeon and facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Steven Goldman. We combine technically advanced techniques with an uncompromising artistic philosophy to give natural yet dramatic results, beyond what a neighbor spa can offer. And we understand how to combine neurotoxins with skin care, fillers, nonsurgical skin tightening, lasers, and even surgery to achieve unparalleled results. By offering a comprehensive suite of treatment options, both surgical and nonsurgical, we set ourselves apart from more limited spas that use basic techniques.

What Are Neurotoxin Injections?

Botox, Dysport, Daaxify, and the other neurotoxins are all forms of botulinum toxin, a protein derived from bacteria that paralyzes muscles. Small, precise amounts of botulinum toxin can be injected directly into small facial muscles that cause wrinkles to relax those muscles, thereby smoothing dynamic wrinkles, the wrinkles that form when the muscles contract. Neurotoxins can also be used to elevate the brows, improve the smile, and correct some types of facial asymmetry. The paralytic, relaxation effect of neurotoxins is temporary, usually lasting 3-4 months, occasionally longer.

How Do Neurotoxins Work?

The active ingredient in the neurotoxins is a purified form of botulinum toxin, derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Botulinum toxin chemically binds to the nerve ending of motor nerves, the nerves that cause muscle contraction. This paralyzes the muscles at the site of injection, so Botox and the other neurotoxins can be injected into facial muscles to relax dynamic wrinkles, the wrinkles formed by muscle contraction, like the vertical frown lines between the eyebrows (the corrugator creases), the crow’s feet, and horizontal lines in the forehead. When injected in a precise, artful fashion, neurotoxins can produce a dramatic but natural rejuvenative effect. The effects are temporary, usually lasting about 4 months but up to 6 months, as the muscles gradually regain their ability to contract, so regular treatments are required to maintain results.

Types of Neurotoxins

There are several FDA-approved brands of cosmetic botulinum toxin. Botox was the first, but Dysport lasts longer in most patients. Daaxify is the newest brand and also appears to have a longer duration. Each neurotoxin has unique properties. Dr. Goldman and his team have extensive experience with all brands, and can help you decide which is best for you. Current brands include:

  • Dysport: Dr. Goldman uses Dysport for most patients because it has a longer duration of effect than most forms of botulinum toxin and spreads out appropriately from each injection site to give a soft, natural appearance. It also has a faster onset than Botox
  • Botox: Botox was the first FDA-approved botulinum toxin for cosmetic injection, although other brands preceded it for medical indications, like muscle spasm. It is still the best known brand of toxin.
  • Daxxify: Daxxify is a newest neurotoxin that offers a similar effect to Botox but with a longer duration. This innovative product can provide wrinkle-reducing results for up to 6 months. Daxxify is ideal for those seeking extended results with fewer treatments over time.
  • Xeomin: Xeomin is a unique neurotoxin that is purified to remove unnecessary proteins. This results in a product with fewer additives and potentially a lower risk of developing resistance over time. Xeomin provides a natural-looking reduction in wrinkles and is used to treat areas such as the forehead, frown lines, and crow's feet.
  • Jeuveau: Jeuveau is one of the newer forms of botulinum toxin. It uses a unique carrier molecule to stabilize the botulinum toxin protein, which may be useful in some patients.

Each of these neurotoxins can be used to achieve effective, subtle facial rejuvenation by relaxing problematic wrinkles without surgery. The neurotoxins can actually achieve certain effects better than surgery, like relaxing the crow’s feet, forehead wrinkles, and vertical frown lines between the brows. Thus, patients who undergo facelifts or related surgeries usually benefit from neurotoxins as well.

During your consultation, Dr. Goldman and his expert injectors will discuss which options are best suited to meet your aesthetic goals and needs. We emphasized personalized treatment plans and long-term followup to give you the best possible results.

Your Neurotoxin Appointment: What to Expect

Before your treatment, you’ll meet with our team for an initial consultation. A thorough medical history and careful physical exam, including facial analysis, will be performed. An in-depth discussion of your goals and of the treatment options will help determine if you are a good candidate for neurotoxin injection and, if so, the appropriate dosage and ideal injection sites for your needs.

At treatment, the area to be injected will be cleansed, and a topical anesthetic may be applied to ensure your comfort. The neurotoxin is then injected into specific muscles using a fine needle. The injections themselves typically take only a few minutes, with most patients reporting only minor discomfort.

After the treatment, you may notice redness or slight swelling at the injection sites, but this usually subsides within a few hours. There is usually no downtime. You can resume your normal activities immediately other than avoiding strenuous exercise and for a few hours after the procedure. Results usually become noticeable within 2 days for Daaxify, 4 days for Dysport, and 7 days for Botox as the neurotoxin starts to take effect, with full results visible within about 2 weeks.

Neurotoxin Injections FAQs

Neurotoxin injections are used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, particularly around the forehead, eyes, and between the brows. They can also be used for medical conditions such as chronic migraines, excessive sweating, and muscle spasticity.

The effects of neurotoxin injections typically last between 3 and 6 months, most commonly about 4 months. The duration may vary depending on the specific product used and individual factors.

While generally safe, potential side effects of neurotoxins include temporary bruising, swelling, or drooping of the eyelids or eyebrows. Serious side effects are rare. Eyelid droop occurs much less than 1% of the time in Dr. Goldman’s practice. There have been no documented allergic reactions to botulinum toxin.

The number of treatments needed will vary depending on your goals. Maintenance treatments are most commonly performed every 4 months, but this varies significantly between patients based on preference and duration of relaxation.

After your treatment session, you may experience mild redness, swelling, or bruising at the injection sites. These side effects are usually temporary. Swelling rarely lasts more than a few hours; bruises are usually small but can last a couple weeks.
