Rhinoplasty Surgery (Nasal Reshaping)
Learn More about Our Cleveland Ohio Nose Surgeon
Rhinoplasty is any procedure that involves reshaping the nose to enhance appearance and improve nasal breathing. Rhinoplasty is the most complex of the commonly performed cosmetic procedures. Patients desire a noticeable and dramatic result that is also beautiful and natural, not surgical or artificial. The beautiful nose will then blend harmoniously with the rest of the face.
How to find the right surgeon for your rhinoplasty.
The most important factor is to find someone experienced with this procedure. Find the right Cleveland Ohio nose surgeon based on word-of-mouth referrals, training, board certification, experience, and results. Make sure the prospective doctor is certified by an ABMS (American Board of Medical Specialties) recognized board; all major United States Medical Boards are members of the ABMS. Then meet with the physician to see if they understand your goals, can explain the risks and benefits of the procedure, and can show you before and after photographs of similar patients.
Why choose Dr. Goldman?
Dr. Goldman is board certified in both Plastic Surgery and Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery (also known as Ear, Nose, Throat surgery), which means he not only completed a fully accredited United States residency in both surgical fields (see Dr. Goldman’s credential page for details), he also successfully completed the required written and oral examinations. Dr. Goldman is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
Dr. Goldman has special expertise and experience with both cosmetic and medically necessary rhinoplasty, including rhinoplasty for patients with cleft lip deformity, rhinoplasty for skin cancer reconstruction, and revision rhinoplasty for patients who are having problems after prior nasal surgery.

Medically Necessary Septorhinoplasty.
Medically, rhinoplasty may be performed to open the nasal breathing passages by straightening crooked structures inside the nose. Several related procedures may be performed in conjunction with rhinoplasty to help breathing. Septoplasty straightens a crooked nasal septum, which is the thin wall of cartilage and bone that separates the left and right halves of the nose. When septoplasty and rhinoplasty are performed concurrently, they are referred to as a septorhinoplasty. Turbinate reduction procedures reduce the size of the turbinates, which are usually pinkish red and can be seen on the side-wall of the nose when one looks into the nose. The turbinates warm, filter, and humidify the air passing into the nose. There are other procedures that may also be performed to enhance breathing if necessary.
Each rhinoplasty in Cleveland Ohio, or elsewhere, has individual variations that make it unique for a given patient. There are several basic goals that will be used in different ways and combinations for a cosmetic rhinoplasty:
- remove a bump or hump on the bridge of the nose
- make the nose smaller
- straighten the nose
- narrowing the nose
- make the tip of the nose less bulbous or full
- turn the tip up
- make the nostrils smaller
- make the tip project out less
Less commonly, but especially in certain situations like ethnic rhinoplasty or revision of previous rhinoplasty, different goals may be important:
For your nasal surgery in Ohio, two issues are paramount First, your nose surgeon truly understands your goals and develops a surgical plan with you that embodies these goals. Secondly, the surgical plan combines these goals in a harmonious way, so that the nose becomes beautiful and proportionate in and of itself while simultaneously becoming more in concert with your facial features overall.
Open versus closed rhinoplasty.
Your nose surgeon should always be willing to discuss the surgical techniques to be used for your rhinoplasty in as much detail as you want and in terms you can understand. The two general types of Ohio rhinoplasty are open and closed. Open techniques, also referred to as external rhinoplasty, utilize incisions that allow the skin to be lifted off the cartilages of the nasal tip. Closed, or endonasal, techniques use incisions entirely inside the nose. The incisions for the open technique are still mainly inside the nose and are otherwise well hidden. As a generalization, open techniques allow more drastic changes to the nose but require more recovery time. Dr. Goldman utilizes both techniques, choosing which is most appropriate based on the individual needs of your Cleveland rhinoplasty procedure.
Risks and benefits.
Our Consents/Pre- and Post-operative Instructions page discusses the risks of rhinoplasty in detail. Risks specific to this procedure include epistaxis (nose bleed), septal perforation (developing a hole in the nasal septum), worsening of nasal breathing, asymmetry, and cosmetic problems. About 5% of primary (first-time) rhinoplasties, and about 15% of revision rhinoplasties (fixing a previous issue), will require further surgery to revise or adjust a cosmetic or breathing problem after surgery.
Nevertheless, when performed properly, this is a safe, effective, and artistic procedure that can enhance the entire facial appearance.
