Tummy Tuck and Breast Augmentation with Implants,
Breast Lift, or Breast Reduction
What is a Mommy Makeover?
The mommy makeover refers to the combination of an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) with breast enhancement surgery (breast augmentation with implants, breast lift, or breast reduction).
What are the advantages of combining both procedures?
The patient can have one surgery instead of two and one recovery instead of two. Some cost may be reduced as well and it has now been demonstrated to be both safe and effective to do these procedures in conjunction with each other at the same setting. Furthermore, the aesthetic improvements of the breast and stomach are complementary. An abdominoplasty produces an excellent enhancement of the hourglass contour of the trunk (torso) for women. When this is combined with breast enhancement, the hourglass effect is even more pronounced in a dramatic yet natural way.
What are the 3 main components to an abdominoplasty?
- Excess skin is removed usually from below the waistline to either above or just below the belly button. The skin above the belly button is redraped downward to smooth the entire abdominal contour.
- Muscle tightening is performed with long-acting dissolvable sutures that are placed in a connective tissue layer called the anterior rectus sheath. This is a thin tendon-like layer of dense connective tissue that sits on top of the washboard (rectus abdominis) muscles. Sutures through this layer tighten and flatten the front of the belly, allowing us and most patients to create a nice concave type appearance to the front of the belly and on the sides, this defines, emphasizes and brings in the narrowest portion of the hour glass to feminize the female torso.
- Liposuction is a standard part of the abdominoplasties, and focuses on the flanks (the hips) and lower abdomen. Liposuction of the front of the abdomen is done conservatively so as not to interfere with healing. Without liposuction, the abdominoplasty can look incomplete and the hourglass shape is not enhanced as nicely.
Breast Augmentation, Breast Lift or Breast Reduction?
Some patients benefit from breast reduction, some from implants, and some from breast lift (mastopexy) and some from a combination of these procedures. Dr. Goldman frequently performs a small volume vertical breast reduction with moderately sized implants. Many patients need both the lift and fullness, especially in the upper and inner aspects of the breasts. As with all plastic surgery procedures, we tailor the specific procedure to patients aesthetic goals and physical characteristics whether they need an augmentation, lift or reduction.
